TACTICS TECH N’ TEACH: Empowering Young Learners Through Digital Literacy
TACTICS

In today’s rapidly evolving digital age, technology has become an essential part of education. From preparing assignments to creating presentations and accessing information online, students are now expected to possess basic computer skills even at an early age. However, while many elementary students are familiar with gadgets and social media platforms, structured knowledge on productivity tools and responsible technology use remains limited.

Recognizing the importance of digital literacy among young learners, the The Ateneo Consortium of Technological, Information, and Computing Sciences (TACTICS), together with the Department of Computer Science (DCS) faculty members, a volunteer from Body of Internal TACTICS Support (BITS), with the guidance and support of Community Council Development (CCD), and University Social Involvement, conducted the Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program on March 13, 2026, at Guillermo Azañes Elementary School in Zone 2, Manguiring, Calabanga, Camarines Sur.

The outreach activity successfully introduced Grade 6 students of Guillermo Azañes Elementary School to the fundamentals of Microsoft Word and provided them with practical experiences in using digital tools for academic purposes. Through interactive discussions and hands-on learning activities, the program sought to empower students with foundational technological skills that can help them in their educational journey.

Bridging the Digital Skills Gap
The Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program was organized in response to the growing need for digital literacy in education. As students prepare for higher levels of learning, the ability to use productivity software such as Microsoft Word becomes increasingly important. Academic tasks today often require properly formatted digital documents, making computer literacy an essential competency for learners.

The activity specifically aimed to equip students with basic word processing skills, enhance their confidence in using digital tools, and promote responsible and effective use of technology in school-related activities. At the same time, the outreach initiative also served as an opportunity for TACTICS officers and volunteers to strengthen their leadership, communication, facilitation, and organizational skills through community engagement.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program particularly addresses gaps in digital equity. Specifically, SDG 4 Quality Education through inclusive and equitable quality education by providing learners with opportunities to develop digital literacy and computer-related skills essential for modern learning. Furthermore, it advances SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure by introducing students to software and digital tools through hands-on exposure, the activity encouraged technological awareness among young learners. At its core, the program delivers in alignment with SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals. The successful implementation of the program highlighted the importance of collaboration among student organizations, educational institutions, faculty members, and volunteers in promoting meaningful initiatives.

Through these efforts, the outreach activity contributed to broader educational and community development goals while promoting technological inclusion among students. More than just a teaching activity, Tech n’ Teach reflected TACTICS’ continuing advocacy of making technological education more accessible to students in partner schools and local communities.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
The outreach activity officially began with an orientation and introduction of the facilitators. Students were informed about the objectives of the program and the significance of digital literacy in modern education.

During the session, Jasper Gomez, 4th Year Representative of TACTICS, facilitated a discussion on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word. He introduced the students to the basic structure of the software, including its interface, commonly used tools, and essential formatting functions such as typing, editing text, changing font styles, and organizing simple documents.

To make the session more engaging and interactive, the students were grouped and guided through hands-on computer activities. With the assistance of TACTICS officers and the BITS volunteer, the participants practiced typing exercises, explored formatting features, and created their own basic documents using Microsoft Word.

The interactive learning approach encouraged teamwork, participation, and collaboration among the students. Despite not having full class attendance, a total of 30 Grade 6 students actively participated in the outreach activity and demonstrated enthusiasm throughout the session.

The facilitators also ensured that students were guided properly during the exercises, creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment where participants were encouraged to ask questions and explore the software independently.

Creating Meaningful Impact
The Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program made a positive contribution to both the beneficiaries and the facilitators. Through the activity, the participating students gained practical knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Word, helping them become more confident in navigating digital tools for educational purposes.

For many of the students, the outreach activity served as an introduction to formal computer-based learning beyond casual gadget use. The skills they acquired are expected to help them in preparing assignments, projects, and other academic requirements in the future.

Aside from developing technical skills, the activity also promoted active participation, teamwork, and collaborative learning among the participants. Students were encouraged to work together, communicate effectively, and assist one another during the exercises.

Meanwhile, the outreach initiative also became a valuable learning experience for the TACTICS officers and volunteers. Through the planning and facilitation of the activity, they were able to improve their leadership, communication, teamwork, and organizational skills while strengthening their commitment to community service.

“The outreach program became a meaningful experience for us because we were able to share our knowledge and help young students learn basic computer skills. It was fulfilling to see the students actively participate and enjoy the activities.” - Aliah Aguinillo (Project head)

“Being part of the Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program made me realize how important digital literacy and word processing skills are for young learners today. Even with only around 30 students participating, it was fulfilling to see their eagerness to learn and how the outreach helped bridge a gap in their knowledge of basic productivity tools like Microsoft Word. The experience gave me hope that through continuous and sustainable efforts, we can reach and empower even more students by making technological education more accessible to them.” - Aj Villafuerte (Project Co-head)

“On behalf of the Guillermo Azañes faculty and staff, we want to sincerely thank you for choosing us as part of your Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program. Our learners are profoundly grateful for the time and effort you shared in teaching them about Microsoft Word- skills that will open doors to the world of modern technology. You also didn’t just teach them; you inspired them. Many of my students have said, ‘I want to be like them someday,’ which shows the lasting impact you’ve made on their lives. Just keep on inspiring young learners, ateneans!” - Mylene Napay (Grade 6 Adviser)

Sustainable Development Goals
The Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 4 Quality Education - The program promoted inclusive and equitable quality education by providing learners with opportunities to develop digital literacy and computer-related skills essential for modern learning.

SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure - By introducing students to software and digital tools, the activity encouraged technological awareness among young learners.

SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals - The successful implementation of the program highlighted the importance of collaboration among student organizations, educational institutions, faculty members, and volunteers in promoting meaningful initiatives.

Through these efforts, the outreach activity contributed to broader educational and community development goals while promoting technological inclusion among students.

Continuing the Advocacy
Following the success of the Tech n’ Teach Outreach Program, TACTICS plans to continue conducting similar community-based initiatives in partner schools and local communities. The organization also aims to strengthen partnerships with schools and encourage more volunteers to participate in technology-driven outreach activities. Through continuous collaboration and community engagement, TACTICS aims to sustain its advocacy of empowering young learners through accessible technological education beyond the current school year.

The success of Tech n’ Teach serves as a reminder that education goes beyond classrooms and textbooks. By sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and empowering communities through technology, student organizations can create meaningful and lasting impact—one learner at a time.
